Representations in Music Videos

The Male Gaze-

We know that this video is a representation of Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze as a result as the way woman are portrayed in the video. They appear to only be seen as sex symbols and worship the man in the video. They are seen from mostly quite provocative angles as shown in the picture below.

Voyeurism is the sexual interest in or practice of spying on people engaged in intimate behaviours, such as undressing, sexual activity, or other actions usually considered to be of a private nature. This means that the artist does not know that we are looking at him/her almost as in a peeping tom sense.Lily Allens music video Hard out Here is an example of this, she is not inviting you in but we still see a lot of exposure of her in the video.

Exhibitionism-

Extravagant behaviour that is intended to attract attention to oneself. It is the idea of invitiog one to observe one actions. It is very similar to the male gaze in music video. Artists like Rihanna, Beyonce and Nicki Minaj are all examples of this, they show off their body in order to attempt success. I have used Beyonce as an example of this. She is aware that her audience are looking at her yet shows off her body to the audience regardless. 




The Female Gaze-

The opposite to the male gaze. The idea with the female gaze is that it is woman looking at a man in the music video as you can see below I have chosen Peter Andre- Mysterious Girl, Regularly he is seen amongst others in favourable body shots. As an audience we are exposed to regular body shots that show a females perception
