Little Things- 5 Directions (prelim task)

1) Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
Or group consisted of
Nick Roxby
Ben Caleno
Joe Griffiths
Max Johnson and myself.

Nick and max put themselves forward to be the two main characters in the video however, we all had a role to play in the acting side of the video. Due to the nature of the task and video itself it took a long time to get the shots due to a mixture of reasons such as angles and maintaining a serious attitude. With regard to the editing of the footage it was very mixed with people all able and willing to edit the footage no one was ever left alone to edit this meant there was always a second opinion on the choice of editing.

2) How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?

We all sat in a group and decided who would play each character and we looked at the nature of each shot angles timings etc we had an idea of what we were doing before we started the task but due to the remake style of the task it was important that we could regularly refresh our memories as to what the shot was like.

3) What theories could you apply to the video you chose?

The video does not clearly represent any of the theories. You could argue that voyeurism is shown from the sense the band members do not know they are being observed however there is nothing sexual within the video. There is also a mild relevance to the female gaze, the band members are all good looking boys so attract female attention however the men are not being exhibited.

4) What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?
Camcorders- something to record our work, the camcorders give a quick and simple solution to recording work such as this.
Tripods- we needed tripods for the still shots and also when we all needed to be in the shot. We needed a high angle wide shot and used the tripod yo achieve this
Editing Software- We used this to group all the footage and create a running order, it also allowed us to change the length of the shot and add on certain features such as fade outs and black and white effect as shown in the real clip.
YouTube- We used YouTube to broadcast and demonstrate our work we also used it to study the video we were given the challenge of copying.

5) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?

When planning we all chipped in to what we thought would be the best way to go about completing the task successfully. A difficult thing to overcome was finding the appropriate time to film as we needed a lot of different shots that takes a considerable amount of time. We had to fit this in around our available time and the availability of the music room. Editing took place in and out of lessons with a variation of input and work from the group.

6) How successful was your music video copy? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently? What did others say about your production?

The production wen't well we got some good feedback and understand what we did well and perhaps not so well. We can take that into the real assessment which i assume will be far more challenging. The editing went well throughout it looks like we are close to the real video regarding shot length. Perhaps we could have done better regarding our singing we did not open our mouths enough of play the guitar realistically enough.

7) What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your music video, do you think?

When moving on to the assessed task i would look to be more focused during the filming, as we will have to film more footage it is important to be disciplined so that the filming can get finished.

8) How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?

You are a lot more restricted when filming this music video as you are trying to emulate someone else's ideas and success where as the opening of the film was ours has never been done before an gave us license to do as we pleased.

9) What are your strengths and weaknesses as a group member?

I was good at organising when we could access the music room decided on shots and advising the rest of the group on problem solutions. I did not look very convincing in the clip with regards to the guitar playing.

10) Looking at the other group's videos which do you think were most successful and why?

The High School Musical one was my favorite the speed and dance within would have been very difficult to film and also hard to piece together they did it very successfully.
